A talk with Conchúr Ó Giollagáin.

Tabharfar aghaidh sa chaint seo ar an aimhleas a dhéantar ar an bpobal Gaelach de bharr neamhábharthacht dhioscúrsa reatha na teanga. Áitítear go gcothaíonn an pholaitíocht reatha teanga tosaíochtaí tánaisteacha i measc Gael agus go laghdaítear ar an acmhainn atá acu aghaidh a thabhairt ar phríomhdhúshláin:

  • Seachaint impleachtaí dhul i léig na Gaeltachta
  • Míréir earnálacha oifigiúla na Gaeilge/Gaeltachta le riachtanais lucht a labhartha
  • A theoranta atá na tacaíochtaí socheacnamaíochta a chuirtear ar fáil do na Gaeil
  • Coimhthíos an Státchórais ó thuaidh le héilimh an phobail ar thacaíochtaí foirmeálta
  • Laghad na ceannaireachta acadúla/intleachtúla a thugann na forais taighde don phobal

Féachann an anailís úr seo le héalú as an gcur chuige neamhbhisiúil trí mholtaí forásacha a chur i láthair le cumas a thabhairt do Ghaeil ina gcúinsí comhaimseartha. Moltar bonn fóinteach gnímh dóibh siúd ar mian leo brí shóisialta a thabhairt don fhéiniúlacht Ghaelach.

In this talk with Conchúr ÓGiollagáin, social and political challenges presently faced by Gaels will be critically examined. Despite the bold attempts of spokespeople for the Irish language in various districts throughout the country, it is claimed that the Irish language politics being practiced at present, is corroding the solidarity amongst Gaels. This talk aims to look at the detriment caused to the broader Irish language community as a result of the continued, irrelevant language discourse. It’s argued that the current language politics fosters trivial priorities amongst Gaels, and that the resources required to face the main challenges, are diminished as a consequence. Challenges such as:

  • The avoidance of implications resulting from the decline of Gaeltacht areas
  • The incongruity of the official Irish language/Gaeltacht sectors with the needs of speakers of the language
  • Restrictions on the socioeconomic support made available to Gaels
  • The northern state system’s incongruity with the community’s demands for formal support
  • Paucity of academic or intellectual leadership which provides the academic research to the public

This new analysis aims to break away from the unproductive approach, through the presentation of progressive recommendations empowering Gaels, in modern circumstances. A practical basis from which one could act is suggested for those who wish to give social meaning to questions of Irish identity.
