Mind Your Business? Holding Companies to Account for Human Rights Abuses Abroad
Global business knows no border, neither do shocking human rights abuses. How can big business be held to account for harming people and planet everywhere they operate? Join us to find out!

Assassination, arbitrary detention, violent intimidation, the mass destruction of indigenous lands. These are just some of the shocking human rights abuses committed by some big businesses operating in today’s global economy. Rarely, if ever, are these crimes brought to the attention of the public, much less punished. How can big business be held to account for harming people and planet everywhere they operate?

Join Trócaire and Ulster University to find out about some of the shocking examples of human rights and environmental abuses that occur in value chains, including abuses involving companies operating in the UK and Ireland.

In this session we’ll watch a short documentary, hear from expert researchers working on the frontlines of international corporate crime, and unpack case studies. These stories of abuse will also shine a light on the formidable barriers victims face when trying to access justice.

Set again this challenging backdrop, we’ll hear about the proposed law which would hold companies to account and ensure victims have access to justice.

This session will provide an opportunity to discuss how we can all play a part in building momentum towards this pioneering legal framework that can finally sanction companies trafficking goods and services tainted by human rights abuses.
