The Democratic Future of Northern Ireland
This event will highlight the democratic debates surrounding the future of Northern Ireland.

Organised by the Democracy Unit at QUB, we begin by focusing on representative democracy and examine the views of elected politicians in the UK on the issue of the union: what are the main arguments in favour of maintaining the union? We also examine deliberative democracy in the form of citizens’ assemblies. We discuss how engaging citizens in careful discussion can contribute to our understanding of important political issues in Northern Ireland and debates around a potential Irish unity referendum.

Contributors: Professor John Garry, Dr. Coree Brown Swan and Dr. James Pow.

The contributors are from The Democracy Unit in QUB, a research centre focusing on the study of democratic debate. The contributors are also members of the Northern Ireland Assembly Election Study 2022 funded by the Economic and Social Research Council of the UK.  Imagine! Belfast is grateful to the unit for their sponsorship of our Democracy Day strand.
