Hidden Barriers

Hidden Barriers
A journey along Belfast’s secret peace lines.

WEDNESDAY 20TH MARCH

11:00AM – 1:30PM

Starts main reception, Ulster University, York Street

£5.00

This event takes an alternative bus tour through the city of Belfast.

Drawing on findings from the Hidden Barriers research programme at Ulster University, the tour visits a range of divisive – but largely unknown – architectural installations put in place by a confidential government security committee during ‘The Troubles’.

Quite distinct from the city’s widely recognised ‘peace walls’, these ‘hidden barriers’ are made up of commonplace and nondescript architecture and spaces such as shops, offices, factories, roads and landscaping.

The tour travels to Belfast’s north, east and west to reveal first-hand how these seemingly benign structures effectively hide in plain sight, continuing to divide Catholics and Protestant communities more that twenty-five years since the signing of the Belfast Agreement.

Tour begins and ends at Ulster University’s York Street main reception.
