Across the world, music has been a mirror to political struggles, a means of communication during times of conflict, and a vehicle for cultural expression. Closer to home, the relationship between music and politics is deeply intertwined, particularly due to our history of conflict, social divisions, and different cultural identities.
Following similar events examining the relationship between politics and art forms such as poetry, this year we have invited a range of current politicians to take part in this discussion chaired by Stuart Bailie when each participant will talk about three favourite pieces of music that have influenced their political careers and then take part in a panel discussion on the importance of music in their lives.
We are delighted that Claire Hanna (SDLP), Deirdre Hargey (Sinn Féin), Emma Little-Pengelly (DUP), Kate Nicholl (Alliance) and Peter Wray (UUP) have agreed to take part in this unique event chaired and facilitated by Stuart Bailie.
There has always been a powerful synergy between music and politics as artists throughout history have used their music to express social or political messages.
Songs can serve as a powerful tool to convey ideas, protest against injustices, or to reflect the zeitgeist of a particular era and music has the ability to influence public opinion, inspire movements, and contribute to social change.
Conversely, political events can also shape the themes and messages found in music.
At this event, as well as listening to an eclectic range of songs, we will consider how music has influenced local political leaders and played a significant role in shaping and reflecting the political landscape.
