‘Well Dressed Hooligans’: The Story of the Belfast Suffragettes

A walking tour with guide Emma Casey, introducing you to some of the important locations for the suffrage movement in Belfast and some of the women who took part in the fight for the right to equal citizenship.

SUNDAY 30TH MARCH

11:00AM – 1:00PM

£15

You’ll hear about a female doctor who was a close personal friend to Emmeline Pankhurst and who attended some of the women at their trials here in Belfast and also at the Crumlin Road Gaol during their incarceration. You’ll hear about a woman sent over from London to Belfast to lead the campaign who went on a hunger strike nine times.

You’ll see where many of the so-called militant speeches were made by the leaders of the suffragettes including Mrs. Pankhurst. You’ll also see where the women of Belfast had a parade every Friday to sell their newspaper The Suffragette.

So, if you wondered what your Great Granny might have been getting up to in the first few decades of the Twentieth Century come along and find out!

We meet at the front gates of Belfast City Hall and the two-hour walking tour takes place on flat ground/pavement in Belfast City Centre. We finish in Donegall Place.
