talks

An engaging conversation with leading academics and journalists trying to understand the legacy of the EU referendum of June 2016.

MONDAY 23RD MARCH

3:30PM – 6:00PM

FREE ADMISSION

On the tenth anniversary of the United Kingdom’s historic vote to leave the European Union, The Constitution Society and Ulster University will host a thought-provoking mini conference, bringing together leading experts, political figures, and members of the public. This event, held at Ulster University’s Belfast campus, provided a timely opportunity to reflect on one of the most consequential political decisions in recent British history, and to assess its impact a decade on.

Speakers will consider the complexities of negotiating withdrawal, and the subsequent legislative changes that have redefined the UK’s relationship with the EU and its own internal constitutional arrangements. The event will also look at the challenges faced by devolved administrations, particularly in Northern Ireland, in adapting to the new realities brought about by Brexit. Consideration will also be given to the lessons learned from the negotiation process, the impact on intergovernmental relationships within the UK, and how Brexit has reshaped political discourse.

This event will serve as a valuable forum for honest reflection, informed debate, and the sharing of insights that will shape the next chapter of the UK’s constitutional journey.

Panel 1: 3.30pm

Professors Jon Tonge (University of Liverpool), Stephen Farry (Ulster University) and Katy Hayward (Queen’s University)

Panel 2: 4:30pm

Leading journalists Mark Devenport, Sam McBride and Allison Morris.

Attendees will be greeted at ground floor reception and signposted to the sixth floor atrium.
