Ulster University’s School of Education, with support from the Integrated Education Fund, is proud to announce the launch of Transforming Education in Northern Ireland – a powerful new publication that brings together 24 independent academic papers examining different aspects of our education system. This timely and thought-provoking volume explores the religious, social, and community segregation that continues to shape the educational experiences of children and young people across Northern Ireland.

The 24 briefing papers were produced as part of the Transforming Education project during the period 2019-2025 with the aim of highlighting inefficiencies and inequities in the Northern Ireland education system and stimulating reflection and debate among teachers, educationalists, decision makers and the wider public.

This publication compiles all of these papers into one comprehensive volume with a Foreword and Conclusion to draw out the key findings, lessons learned and potential next steps to connect evidence with policy and practice.

Through rigorous research, each contribution offers a critical insight into how our current structures perpetuate division, while also presenting evidence-based pathways toward a more inclusive, equitable, common model of education. The book challenges long-standing assumptions and invites everyone with an interest in education to engage in discussion about schooling in a post-conflict society.

The launch event is sponsored by Nick Mathison MLA, Chairperson of the Committee for Education and will feature a Keynote Address by Dr Keir Bloomer, Chairperson of the recent Independent Review of Education and presentations by the principal authors, Dr Stephen Roulston and Dr Matt Milliken, to illuminate key findings and themes emerging from the project. Their presentations will be followed by a panel responding to the issues raised and reflecting on the challenges — and possibilities — of transforming education in Northern Ireland.

You are warmly invited to join us for what promises to be an engaging and impactful discussion. The event includes presentations and discussion. A light lunch will be provided for all guests.
