The Imagine! Belfast Festival of Ideas & Politics is partnering with Urban Scale Interventions (USI) and the European Creative Rooftop Network to identify a Belfast Rooftop for transformation during its forthcoming festival in March. Comprising as much as 25% of cities’ land area, the organisers believe that rooftops are an exciting spatial resource which can be transformed for a variety of purposes including urban farming, social spaces, and cultural venues.
According to Peter O’Neill, Director of Imagine! Belfast: “As the pandemic highlighted, there is a great need for more outdoor areas and rooftops are increasingly regarded as an important part of public space. Through this project we hope to help create a multi-layered city through the activation of Belfast rooftops.“
The public are being asked to nominate a rooftop in Belfast which could be transformed for public use.
Jak Spencer, Partner with USI, said: “We are inviting the public to join us in this innovative project. If you know of a rooftop in Belfast that is, or could potentially be, publicly accessible, we want to know. We’ll then work to transform the rooftop into a newgreen space for the public to use.”
The organisers hope to host two cultural events with the European Creative Rooftop Network in the nominated space during the Imagine! Belfast Festival which is taking place 18-24 March. Through creative engagement, impactful design and quality delivery, USI helps cities, governments and organisations to improve the lives of the people they serve. The European Creative Rooftop Network brings forgotten rooftop spaces to life through cultural and sustainable uses with partners in Barcelona, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Chemnitz, Rotterdam, Faro, Gothenburg and Nicosia.
People should send their nominations before the closing date of 2 February 2024, using this form on our website.
